Release (Fire On Ice Book 5)
NHL Player Orion Caldwell protects his own. He's an enforcer to his core, but he was the one left defenseless when his longtime girlfriend broke his heart. Now he's all about his game, but spending the off season in his hometown forces him to confront painful issues- both old and new.
Samara Cross just wants to be invisible. After living a nightmare, she came back to her hometown seeking solace. But her quiet new life is upturned by the hot, charismatic hockey player who's taken a sudden interest in her.
Orion and Samara find something unexpected in each other, but when the hockey off season ends, so does their time together. They struggle with their separation, confronted by ghosts of the past and an uncertain future, discovering that sometimes the only way to hold onto something precious is to let it go.
Review:
Orion's job on the ice is to protect, it is also his nature off the ice. During the off season he travels home to help his mother and sister. His father recently passed away and his sister's no good husband is gone- leaving her with his niece and sick nephew to support. His first day back in his hometown he runs into Samara, a girl he went to high school with, but never really noticed until now.
Samara has a troubled past, growing up in the foster care system and recovering from a bad relationship, she is guarded. When Orion starts pursuing her, she has to fight the instinct to run. She slowly begins to let down her walls, to let him in, but can't put aside the thoughts of what will happen at the end of the summer when he returns to his NHL life and the lingering fear of her past coming back to haunt her... Only she's isn't the only one worried about the end summer... Will true love keep those two together? Or, will the stress of distance and troubled pasts push them apart?
I loved this sweet story. It was all I had hoped for Orion and then some! The author does a fabulous job of slowly building a relationship, making you fall in love with her characters and has you rooting for their happily ever after. I gave this book 5 STARS and I look forward to more from Brenda Rothert, she has firmly earned her spot on my auto-buy list.
This book is part of the Fire and Ice series, and while I recommend reading this entire series, it an certainly be read as a stand alone book. Fans of romance in general will love this book and if you love hockey romance it is just icing on the cake!
